Two Approaches to Amino Acid Analysis: A Commercial Kit or ab initio Development
Amino acid analysis is a fundamental biochemical technique used for the determination of the amino acid composition or content of proteins and peptides. It is used for protein drugs and other pharmaceutical or biological preparations containing compounds with primary or secondary amino groups within their molecular structure. In addition, the analysis of amount of proteins or free amino acids is possible. The amino acid composition and concentration of protein or peptides can be determined if the protein or peptide is available in pure condition. These methods form an important part of the overall characterization of biologics for purity and potency.
There are a number of possible approaches to the analysis, including different preparation or detection techniques. Here we look at two broad approaches, using commercially available kits versus development of a method from scratch.
